Persicaria amphibia (amphibious bistort)

Persicaria amphibia (amphibious bistort) has profuse willow-like leaves and the reddish stems contrast well with the pink flower spikes.

Persicaria amphibia (amphibious bistort) is a great native plant for a number of reasons. Firstly it can be used on those dratted deep shelves that people insist on having, and will grow to about 40cm deep. The leaves then float in a most attractive way and the pink flower spikes sit nicely on the water. If grown in a shallower location the willow-like leaves are quite profuse and the reddish stems contrast well. The twiggy stems persist through winter, giving valuable habitat early in the year, unlike many plants which die back completely. Probably one of the best plants for surface cover in a tiny pond and certainly one of my personal favourites.
