Hessian squares are, unsurprisingly, squares of hessian for lining baskets, 45 cm x 45 cm. These aren’t really necessary if you’re using our fine meshed pond baskets, but some people like to use them as a belt and braces method to stop leaching of soil out of the baskets and into the pond, especially for water lilies. They can also be used in which to wrap bare root tubers of lilies with weighted soil to drop to the bottom of larger earth ponds where these cannot be drained for planting. I don’t really recommend this method and prefer to plant lilies in pots and get them established in shallow water first, then drop them into deeper water later.
