Carex riparia (Greater pond sedge)

Carex riparia (Greater pond sedge) is a strong, tough native with coarse sharp edged leaves and attractive black seed heads in early summer.

Carex riparia (Greater pond sedge) is one of the strongest and toughest aquatic grasses with grey green coarse and rather sharp leaves to 120cm high. The black seed heads stand out well when ripe. It makes an excellent wildlife habitat as it spreads rapidly and densely and is duck proof. It is very invasive and unsuitable for smaller ponds, but good for bank reinforcement on the lee side of large ponds and lakes.
