Gunnera perpensa is a useful species, somewhere between the mini species and their massive cousins. It makes large purple hooked flowers over the heart shaped foliage, easily confused with marsh marigolds when young. It is quite vigorous when it gets established and makes good ground cover in the margins, but is not suitable for very cold areas as the fleshy stems can freeze solid, and that’s curtains. It lives outside here just fine, but it must be properly wet.
