Rumex hydrolapathum (Great Water dock) is a valuable food plant for the Comma butterfly, among others, but is not an easy plant to get to look good, as the stems are often bare, the leaves having been devastated by caterpillars! If you can get them to a large size they are quite statuesque and make a good contrast to the mainly grassy leaves of other native plants. They do have a very short season though and may look scruffy, so are probably best in larger wildlife ponds.
