Arundo donax Aurea is the golden form of a tall water reed coming from warmer climes, but still just about hardy enough for the Southern half of the UK. It has stripy green and gold leaves, starting into growth quite late but providing good late summer and autumn interest. It has strongly marked green and yellow stripes on the foliage and grows to about 1.5 metres tall, slowly building into a clump. When old canes become untidy and new ones are about 15cm high, cut off the old ones close to the soil level. It’s essentially a grass, so it’s best to do this in Spring or summer rather than Autumn.
