Geum rivale (Water avens)

Geum rivale (Water avens) is a useful native plant with curious yellow and purple-brown drooping flowers, followed by spidery seed heads.

Geum rivale (Water avens) is a native plant of damp places and isn’t a true marginal plant but will cope with very wet ground. The drooping yellow flowers within purple /maroon bracts are held above rounded leaves and flowers are produced over a very long period, even more so if you cut off the spidery seed heads. It spreads and naturalises well but isn’t invasive. Prefers some shade, grows to 40cm high, forms clumps and will seed into damp soil.
