Many people are tempted by the lovely stripey green, pink and white new foliage of Glyceria aquatica variegata (Variegated manna grass), and this is a lovely plant when supported and confined to a large basket, but it is lax and will flop over adjacent plants. It can be a bit of a thug if planted free range in ponds with an earth base! It can grow to 1.5 metres tall with an indefinite spread. The plain green form is even more invasive and is widely used by river authorities to prevent bank erosion.
