Iris louisiana Black Gamecock has the darkest flowers of any water Iris; this one has tall light green leaves and large dark purple, nearly black flowers with a yellow flash. All Louisiana irises are fast growing and need regular division, repotting and plenty of fertiliser. Flowers are large and spectacular, but much fewer than most other water iris; they do best in a warm location and aren’t best suited to Northern areas. They are pretty much evergreen in mild winters, though overwintered leaves may die off just as they flower, spoiling the effect, so trim back in early Spring.
