The Painter’s mussel (Unio pictorum) is a medium sized mussel of European distribution, so called because the shells were used as receptacles for artist’s paint. It is smaller but rather more common than the swan mussel but filter feeds in the same way, ingesting microscopic algae and plankton thus cleaning the water.
