Phalaris arundinacea (Reed canary grass) is a vigorous and tough aquatic grass; too vigorous for most garden ponds but can provide good wildlife habitat in larger natural ponds. Its non-descript look and lax habit means that it tends to flop over and smother other plants, so it spreads steadily, makes excellent wildfowl cover and is a good filtration plant.
