Potamogeton natans (broad leaved pondweed) is a native deep water plant that is often confused with the non-native water hawthorn. The leaves are similar, but about twice as long as wide rather than four or five times; they are also brownish rather than green. The flowers are knobbly, brown and rather insignificant, not white. Even though this plant can grow rampantly in a large shallow earth pond, it can be hard to get going in pots or baskets as it constantly wants to escape and ramble about. Most suppliers send you leaf cuttings, which are almost impossible to root successfully, but I will send you a complete plant with roots and leaves, hence the rather steep price tag. It will grow in water up to 2 metres or more deep once it has established.
