Fontinalis antipyretica (Willow moss) is a plant of clean and cool, preferably moving shallow water and is unsuitable for most warm and murky garden ponds, where it can often become irretrievably clogged with string algae. Its mossy leaves are good for small spring fed pools which stay cold and this plant will attach to stones and wood. Available Spring and early Summer.
Please note: Bunches of this plant are considerably smaller than those of other oxygenators since the plant is short and slow growing.
The species name derives from an interesting use in Scandinavian countries; it was used to stuff up cracks and crevices in chimneys of primitive dwellings in order to seal them and prevent smoke leaking out inside.
