Pontederia dilatata (Royal pickerel weed) is very similar to P lanceolata, but the leaves are rather more stripey and the flowers a paler blue. It’s now been given the name Monochoria hastata and is a subspecies of Pontederia, but almost everyone still refers to it by its previous name, which itself is disputed. It does prefer a sunny spot for best results; in cooler or shadier places the flowers may not open well. It’s very architectural and graceful and performs late in the season, it’s also fairly duckproof once it gets above their heads.
